United States Government Strengthens PESCO Field Operations

Islamabad, November 27, 2013 – The United States is working with the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) to improve the supply of electricity to customers by extensively strengthening the capacity of distribution company line staff. As part of this effort, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today handed over 70 rickshaws and 30 Ravi vehicles, along with the linemen equipment, to the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO). These new items will improve the supply and reliability of electricity by helping PESCO linemen to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.
Some areas within Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially Peshawar, consist of highly congested streets inaccessible to larger vehicles. USAID’s donated vehicles are specially designed to move through these streets and will allow PESCO linemen to reach remote areas with proper equipment. The rickshaws will allow movement within the busy city streets. This will result in faster and improved services to consumers. The USAID project revives standard network maintenance practices through improved work methods and equipment.

“Effective operations and maintenance of the electricity distribution network depend heavily on the work of well trained and equipped linemen. PESCO’s linemen face a very high, and steadily increasing, accident rate. The importance of providing linemen with proper equipment and training to enable them to do their jobs more efficiently, effectively, and safely cannot be overstated,” said Gregory Gottlieb, the Mission Director of USAID in Pakistan. “It is clear that working in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is not easy and I praise all linemen and PESCO staff who are providing services to the people of Pakistan under difficult conditions,” he added.

The USAID Power Distribution Program is a five-year program that works with government-owned distribution companies in Pakistan to improve their performance by reducing losses and improving revenues and customer services. The United States Government provides assistance to the Government of Pakistan (GOP) through this program in support of the GOP’s efforts to reform Pakistan’s power sector and end the current energy shortfall.
